We stand on the cusp of infinity. Fortuna was originally responsible for deciding our fates, we had nothing to turn to for aid if befallen by some ailment of the body. Science bid its time and eventually overcame that "wretch" Fortuna. We were given remedies for the common sicknesses that would before have exterminated us. More of us lived longer, more of us reproduced. After all, man is nothing if not concerned with self-preservation. Everything we do, everything we say (rational creatures that we are, is done for the sake of survival). What better way to survive than to have a bit one oneself to carry on life when we go, because ladies and gentlemen, go we must. Into that dark place, one day, we must go. I'd like to interject here with a quote:
"We're all going to die, all of us...That alone should make us love each other but it doesn't".
- Charles Bukowski
No matter, empathy is for another time and place. Back to surviving. As I stated, we have an innate yearn to survive, no, more than any yearning it is a mission. That mission was made easier with the advent of medical care, medicine, and the shift towards the idea that technology was to not only be used to help humans survive but to continuously strive for cures. Progress means helping more people live longer lives. Biotechnology has pushed us into territory unbounded. If we can heal all disease and replace every deteriorated part of the body with a new one, then, wouldn't we all live forever? What happens then?
Soylent Green baby, soylent green...
